Why Mutts?

Honestly, we just think the world cares too much about titles and labels instead of focusing on what really matters. Everyone wants to define you as this or that, call you this or that, or label you as they see fit, and in our view, it doesn’t make sense and usually ends up opening doors to every kind of bad behavior.

One day, we were discussing how crazy this is and how so many of the nice things in life are the way they are because of the myriad of different ideas and cultures behind them. Think about your favorite food or music; chances are they are a big mix of different cultural influences that are far from where you lived or grew up. And we think this is amazing!

In this context, Allan gave us the example of the caramel dogs in Brazil. They are street stray dogs that are everywhere, and no one knows anything about them; they belong to no one, but they are beloved by everyone (do yourself a favor and google it!). The group explained that in English, these dogs are called “mutts”. Allan loved the name, but the group was hesitant as the word mutt can sometimes have a negative connotation and can be used in a demeaning way.

And that’s exactly why it HAD to be Mutts. At that moment, we found our mission! To us, Mutts is about showing the world that no matter what you look like, if you belong to this breed or that, or who your tail wags for, at the end of the day, we’re all mutts, and our differences are something to be celebrated, NOT looked down on.

Since then, it has been our mission to foster a culture where people feel welcome and supported, no matter who they are or where they are from. Our aim is to make Mutts a home for those who are away from their homes or for the misfits.

So, welcome to our Mutts fam, and we hope you also feel that we are your home away from home.
